Question #3:

Please help if you are an experienced sailor/ yachtsperson, preferably British but all welcome?

Hello! I have just started my merchant navy training course here in the UK- in 3 years I will be (hopefully) a certified third mate and will hold an MCA certificate of competency.

As I've now started to become more interested in the water, I've naturally started looking at sail boats; I'd love to save up and go on some long cross-ocean cruises.

My question is regarding qualifications and experience. Will my merchant navy MCA certificate of competency cover me for pleasure sailing abroad, or do you have to have a sail-power specific ticket? I was thinking of doing the RYA competent crew course so I could learn about sail power, and then just reply upon my merchant navy training for the rest of the skills I'll need, such as chartwork. Is this a good idea?

Lastly, as I know nothing about sail boats at all, what about a yacht denotes whether it is capable of crossing open ocean rather than hugging the coast? I'm used to VLCC's!

Any help welcome.
Note: I meant 'rely', not 'reply'.

My qualification will be the MCA Certificate of Competency (OOW).

Question #4:

I have a small inflatable boat. I'm thinking of setting up a ferry service in the Lake district?

I was thinking of setting up a ferry service where the bridges are down. Free of charge as I don't like to profit from others misfortune.

The ferry would shuttle people and small amounts of goods from one side of the rivers to the other.

Is this a good idea?

(Alternatively maybe a big swing attached to a crane with lines to either bank could be used.)

(actually I can't do this becuase I am currently ill unfortunately)

Did you watch 2012 ? ...what were your thoughts on the movie ?

Question #12:

Isn't it a pity there aren't more pirates around the world? Apparently Kenyan fisherman are experiencing?

bumper catches of fish since the Somali pirates scared off the big trawlers from the area and fish stocks are soaring, because locals only use small boats and hand lines!! So surely instead of E.U quotas more pirates is the answer? :) Saw this story on a news channel today..having trouble finding a link though...all a bit hush..hush.
Steven J....I think they will just buy a pair of ear defenders.

Question #13:

Atheists as closet Deists?

Was kicking around the idea, with a group of like-minded friends, that many atheists just might be Deist wannabes who are revolted by the vengeful, mythical, silly, or murderous gods of Scripture. I have many friends who have left various religions because they simply could not accept the man-made gods of ANY Scripture, but still admit the possibility (not probability) that there MIGHT be a Universal Entity. Any one else sailing on the same boat???

Question #14:

are Pirates more acceptable than Terrorists?

OK, so if you get kidnapped by terrorists then we send in the army, etc, to sort out the terrorists, but if you get kidnapped by pirates then that's OK??!!

So the Somali pirates will either get the ransom or they will get away with kidnapping/killing British Tourists. So the Somali pirates will buy more and more weapons and bigger boats and there will probably be more of them as well! So the problem gets worse.
Why don't we send in the SAS?

So more and more of the open sea becomes dangerous so that we become less and less free to do whatever we want within the law??
jaypauldini: so if its too dangerous for me to leave my house after 9pm, does that mean I should be a prisoner in my own house? We have police, we have special forces, we have MI5, we pay taxes, we have an army, we have a navy. Surely they should be protecting us, otherwise why are we paying for all this stuf?

Question #20:

With the economy the way it is today would you go out on strike?

If you worked at a union company?
I headed out this morning to go put a application in at a large company in my area. Get to the place -start to pull in the lot and notice guys all around with huge picket signs. "Unfair Working Conditions" and the such wrote on the signs. I said the hell with it, backed my car out and left.

Another company i once worked for and was laid off from earlier this year, they are going through contract negotiations. The workers rejected the contract due to cuts that were being made in pay and benefits. They have been given a final ultimatum by the company to accept the contract or they will close down and move to another location out of state next year. Im willing to bet these bozos wont accept it. 1000 jobs on the line.

With all of the things going on with the economy today, are you as willing to "rock the boat" at work to prove a point, to get your way, to secure a raise or other benefits? Or are you willing to sit back and do whatever is asked of you just to help keep things running smooth and assuring your job security?
